How to Find Spill Kits and Secondary Containment

All regulated businesses in the Well Field area will need to have spill kits and most will need some sort of secondary contaiment for their chemicals.  Spill kits are readily available and usually come in 5 gallon plastic buckets.  They should have everything you need to clean up a chemical spill:  absorbant materials, gloves, etc.  The exact contents will vary, depending on what chemical you have on site.

Secondary containment is simply a tray that catches any leaks or spills from the container.  Plastic or metal pallets are often used for 55 gallon drums.  The pallet is essentially a tub that holds 110% of the container.  A secondary contaiment pallet for 55 gallon drums should hold at least 60.5 gallons of liquid.

CCA has spill kits (and a few secondary containment pallets) available for free.  Yep, that's right; no charge.  We just ask that you keep them in a visible location.  Give us a call to arrange delivery.  These kits have been generously donated by the Portland Development Commission and the Portland Water Bureau.

Local Sources for Equipment

A couple of good websites to view a large selection of containment devices and safety equipment are www.labsafety.com and www.newpig.com.  You can order directly from them or get most of the same items from a local supplier.

Local suppliers can be found in the yellow pages under “safety equipment & clothing.”  Most local suppliers stock a small selection of spill kits and/or secondary containment, but can special order item easily and quickly.
